Can Someone Give Me a Simple Answer?

I come from an awesome family of four kids, born in two distinct sets.  My brother and I were both born in the sixties (1968 and 1966), and our sisters were born in 1976 and 1981.  Needless to say, we did not have a lot in common with our younger siblings while growing up.  We were their babysitters, for the most part!
Here's the question:  When we are together for the holidays, though, there is no denying the fact that we are siblings.  We walk, talk, sing, joke, sit, stand...do everything so similarly.  Could someone please explain heredity / genes in layman's terms for me please?  It is so fascinating.  (We certainly were not raised by the same set of rules...)
Thanks,
OTW
